This Daycation will take us to Delcambre, home of some of Louisiana’s best shrimping. Yes, we love crawfish, but what would we do without shrimp? It is both culturally and economically vital to south Louisiana. From Port Director Wendell Verret we’ll learn about the life of a shrimper, the process of shrimping, the economic impact this industry has on our area, how the industry was affected by the BP oil spill, the hurricanes of ’05 and ’08, and how Delcambre has worked to turn its economy around in order to survive. We’ll also see some shrimp boats at the marina. White rubber boots optional!

We’ll head next door to Erath to visit the Acadian Museum, which commemorates and honors the Acadian heritage and Cajun people of Louisiana. We’ll learn about Warren Perrin’s fight to convince Queen Elizabeth II to issue an official apology for the exile of the Acadians, as well as view artifacts and photographs of earlier Acadian and Cajun times.
We’ll have a late lunch at Shuck’s in Abbeville, a beloved seafood restaurant. After learning about shrimp, it will be time to have some! (Other options will be available, of course.)
To quote Bubba from Forrest Gump, “Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, sauté it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That - that's about it.”
